At Opendoorz, we believe that business growth starts with genuine relationships- and Helen Parsons of Helen Parsons Garden Design exemplifies what’s possible when you embrace connection, curiosity, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone.
We recently caught up with Helen to hear about her experience as a member of the Wallingford Group and the incredible impact networking has had on her business and beyond.
Meet Helen Parsons
Helen is a talented garden designer who has built her business on word-of-mouth recommendations. As she looked to pivot into a more specialized niche; helping homeowners building, renovating, or extending their homes— she realized she needed something more. A stronger network of professionals in the residential construction industry, especially architects who understand and value the role of landscape design.
Feeling isolated as a micro-business owner, Helen decided to take a leap into the world of networking – despite her initial nerves.
“I was a complete newbie to networking. In fact, I hadn’t even considered it before. When I got invited to a meeting, I went simply because the idea scared me – so I had to do it! I ended up really enjoying it.”
An inspiring conversation over drinks after that first meeting gave Helen the confidence to dive in, and when the opportunity arose to help build a new Opendoorz group, she jumped at it.
Setting Goals and Stepping Up
Helen was clear from the start: if she was going to invest time and money, she needed to commit fully—even if it felt outside her comfort zone.
“I worried at first that I wouldn’t have much to contribute in terms of referrals or introductions. But I was reassured that the focus was on building relationships and making a positive contribution.”
Her aim was simple: show up, be positive, and get involved.
Helen didn’t expect to receive much direct business initially – but that assumption, she admits, turned out to be completely wrong.
What’s Been the Best Part So Far?
For Helen, Opendoorz has become more than a business network, it’s been a lifeline.
“I’ve met so many inspiring and fun people – and even made good friends. It’s helped me achieve the pivot I wanted for my business. Members understand what kind of projects excite me.”
She especially enjoys insights that deepen understanding and trust between members. Today, Helen is working on several projects alongside fellow Opendoorz professionals, finding collaboration easy and enjoyable thanks to the trust they’ve built from the start.
Unexpected Surprises and New Opportunities
Sometimes the stars align.
At Helen’s very first meeting with her new group, she met an architect who turned out to be her dream contact: someone who shares her passion for sustainable design and who values the integration of landscaping into building projects.
“We’ve now worked together on several projects, cycled hundreds of kilometres, and probably consumed a few too many litres of coffee and tea discussing ideas!”
It’s a connection that has enriched both Helen’s personal and professional life.
Challenges Along the Way
Helen admits the biggest challenge has been staying on top of names and faces – though she laughs that it’s never actually caused her any trouble. Opendoorz also brings its own set of growth opportunities: stepping up as an ambassador, delivering CPDs to seasoned business owners, and taking on new visibility challenges.
“I was recently asked by another member to contribute a blog and video for them, something I’d normally avoid for my own business. But because it was for someone I trust and respect, I stepped up without hesitation.”
The support and encouragement within Opendoorz, she says, make these challenges feel entirely manageable and ultimately rewarding.
Final Thoughts
Helen’s story is a beautiful reminder that real business growth often starts outside your comfort zone. By embracing new experiences, committing fully, and leading with relationships first, Helen has not only expanded her business but also found a vibrant, supportive community.
We’re so proud to have Helen as part of the Opendoorz family.
