We recently sat down with Ben to learn more about his journey, his motivations, and why he’s found his place in the Opendoorz community.
Meet Ben Thompson
Since founding Thompson & Terry Recruitment back in 2014, Ben has made it his mission to help businesses, from global corporations to local charities – attract, recruit, and retain top-tier talent. Based in Abingdon, his agency takes a unique headhunting approach to standard recruitment vacancies, boasting an incredible 86.4% success rate for first CV submissions last year. That’s compared to the national average of just 5%.
Beyond his agency, Ben is a passionate mentor to recruitment agency owners, HR professionals, and hiring managers. He’s also the host of The Business Brunch with Ben Thompson on Get Radio, where he shares insights and stories from across the business spectrum.
Now, with exciting plans to launch an Executive Search and Biotech Division, it’s clear Ben is just getting started.
Why Opendoorz?
After stepping back from his own networking business, Ben found himself missing the buzz and depth of relationship-building that networking brings. “Having built my business almost entirely through networking, I really missed it,” he says. “I wanted to join a group focused on real relationships and growing together – which made Opendoorz the obvious choice. I’m so glad I did!”
A Focus on People, Not Just Business
Ben didn’t join Opendoorz to chase leads or sales. His aim was to connect with like-minded professionals, bounce around ideas, and build a strong support network. In fact, he set himself an ambitious challenge: to find a meaningful opportunity for every Opendoorz member.
“It’s not about transactions for me – it’s about relationships and insights. If I can help each member, I know the rest will follow.”
What’s Been the Best Part So Far?
No hesitation here – Ben says it’s the people.
“From Cathy, Caroline, and Kate to the wider membership, I’ve honestly loved getting to know such inspiring business owners. The shared learning from different industries has really helped me reflect and grow my own business.”
A Welcome (and Surprising) Bonus
Although new business wasn’t his reason for joining, Ben’s openness and energy have clearly resonated. Since joining in October, he’s been entrusted by seven new clients.
“It’s been so flattering and genuinely rewarding to support fellow members in their recruitment journeys. I didn’t expect that – but I’m truly grateful for the trust.”
Always Up for a Challenge
As someone who throws himself 100% into everything he does, Ben is currently working through his own ambitious goal of getting to know every member through 1:1 insights.
“I’ve already had 40 fantastic insights – each one has taught me something new. Reaching a point where I can confidently recommend every member is a challenge, but it’s one I’m committed to.”
